It’s commonly known that Season of the Witch is the Halloween franchise’s red-headed stepchild. The 1982 release of Halloween III intended to mark the beginning of an anthology of stand-alone horror movies themed around the holiday. It came one year after Halloween II, which satisfied producers John Carpenter and Debra Hill by concluding the Michael Myers/Laurie Strode narrative. The failure of the movie at the box office put a stop to those intentions, but the cult that has subsequently formed around it is carrying on Samhain’s work by highlighting the finest performance in any Halloween movie: Dan O’Herlihy’s portrayal of the evil mask-maker Conal Cochran.
Conal Cochran is unquestionably Halloween III’s Harry Lime, which may offend some people. True, he hasn’t been pronounced dead like Lime in The Third Man, but Cochran is discussed extensively before to his spectacular appearance at the halfway point of the movie. (Orson Welles and O’Herlihy collaborated on their 1948 Macbeth movie adaptation; Welles referred to this as the “star section.”) In some of those comments, a local of Santa Mira refers to Cochran as “a great man” and “a true genius” without being asked.In fact, the wealthy Irishman who turned the town into the largest producer of Halloween masks in the world after World War II is first mentioned as the main characters, Dr. Dan Challis (Tom Atkins) and Ellie Grimbridge (Stacey Nelkin), are driving there to look into her father’s mysterious death and learn what it has to do with Cochran’s Silver Shamrock Novelties.
Santa Mira has been transformed into the epitome of a corporate town in Cochran’s likeness. The factories are all Irish-themed, and all of the employees are immigrants from the Emerald Isle. Some of the locals are upset by this, including a irate intoxicated man who informs Dan that this is “the last Halloween” for Silver Shamrock and that there is rumor of “some pretty wild shit going on in there.” However, Cochran has the town under surveillance, so it doesn’t take long for his thugs to put the drunk to sleep.
Later that evening, when the vendor in the motel room next door has a mishap with a Silver Shamrock mask, Cochran comes out into the open to settle some scores, Dan gets a hint of just how strange things are. It’s difficult to believe that it was “just a small accident,” despite how much he plays up his Irish accent, especially when he adds that his factory has “the most marvelous facility” for “emergency treatment.”
